Potter's Path: Determination That Defines a Champion

Speed and athleticism catch your attention. Relentless effort keeps it. La'Rod Potter (2028) has built his game on both for Wissahickon High School. At 6’1”/ 205lbs, La’Rod possesses a unique blend of speed and length off the edge. He uses that skill set to overwhelm high school linemen. Add in the fact he's still growing into his frame and paired with his relentless work ethic, the long-term projection points to serious star potential at the next level.

Potter describes his style of play as "explosive and fast," believing his "speed and long reach" are his greatest physical assets. Having modeled his game after New York Giants star edge Biran Burns, Potter strives to bring that same blend of explosiveness and length off the edge. Those traits are backed up by the numbers: a 78-inch wingspan, a sub 4.7 second 40-yard dash, a 27.7-inch vertical jump, and an 8 foot, 9-inch broad jump, feats that stand to only get better as Potter develops over the next two years.

Mentally, Potter believes “determination and dedication are the two most important [mental] attributes you need to be successful. Potter elaborated, “You need determination because if you don't want it more than the competition or even your teammates, you won't be successful, let alone play. And you need to be dedicated because it is not only about the days when coaches are watching you work out, but it is about those days where you're at the gym, at the field, or even in your bedroom trying to get stronger and work on your craft." 

Like most athletes, Potter dreams of a Division I college opportunity. Specifically, he is looking for a college with a “great engineering and athletic program” that also “wants [him] to play for them and wants to train [him] to be the best player [he] can be”. Schools such as Villanova, Cornell, and Kutztown are current programs of interest. Thus far this summer he has attended camps at Villanova and Kutztown. Another big emphasis for Potter is ease of access for his family and loved ones, stating “I want to be somewhere my family can come and see me play”,  “somewhere that isn’t too far from home”. 

As he enters his junior season, Potter has set some lofty personal goals - eclipsing 80 total tackles and recording at least five sacks. Numbers that would certainly put him on area scouts’ radar. Wherever his next stop may be, one thing is certain: the program that lands Potter won't just be getting a gifted athlete, they'll be getting one of the hardest workers in the room.
